The Master of Art in Humanities at Mount Saint Mary’s University is a dynamic and flexibleinterdisciplinary program designed for lifelong interested in cultivating a deeper understanding of the connections between the Individual, the Community, and the World.
一道本不卡免费高清Our two-year, 30-unit program brings together students from all educational and professional backgrounds to talk, think, and write about the timeless ideas that have animated culture and society, as well as the contemporary issues we face in Los Angeles, the Pacific Rim, and our larger global environment.
Our weekend-only format is also an innovative approach to adult learning that provides an alternative way of being a graduate student for professionals with complex work and personal schedules. It redistributes the weekly coursework for a traditional fifteen-week semester into six intensive weekends of class instruction. The weekends are non-consecutive and are scheduled two to three weeks apart.
The point of the humanities is to develop habits of rigorous reflective thinking and reasoning, the skill to express ideas in a compelling way, and the ability to solve problems with creativity and innovation. Basically, the humanities are the study of human nature, human values, and what it means to be human using critical and analytical methods of study. Since the time of Socrates, the humanities has offered an alternative to the empirical approach of science in that it allows for judgment and has a fundamental moral component. The humanities is an interdisciplinary field of study that provides a broad range of knowledge and skills that can lead to a variety of employment opportunities.
Why Mount Saint Mary's?
一道本不卡免费高清Our innovative weekend-only format redistributes the weekly coursework of a traditional fifteen-week semester into six non-consecutive weekends of class instruction – an ideal arrangement for busy professionals with multiple outside commitments. Instead of taking night classes after a long day at work, our students take classes every two to three weeks on our beautiful, historic Doheny campus. Flexible enrollment policies also allow for year-round matriculation on a part-time or full-time basis.
一道本不卡免费高清Full-time graduate students enroll in two courses and attend classes all day Saturday and Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students who do not wish to be full time can register for only one course.
Our program allows students to design a course of study that is best suited for their goals. Students can choose an interdisciplinary course of study leading to the M.A. Humanities degree with a selected concentration in one of the major fields of study, i.e. Creative Writing, Cultural Studies, English, or History. Choice extends to include the culminating project, a “capstone” to students’ studies that can take the form of a master’s thesis, a creative project, or a creative writing piece. This ability to choose a personalized final project has enabled our outstanding Humanities graduates to seamlessly convert their academic efforts into a real-world context through such rewarding accomplishments as publications, museum exhibitions, portfolio building, etc.
Small class sizes, state of the art classrooms, accomplished faculty, and an outstanding reputation make the Mount Saint Mary’s M.A. in Humanities program a clear choice for discerning individuals looking for a high quality educational experience. The M.A. in Humanities Program is an associate member of the prestigious Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs. Year after year, the Mount continues to draw talented, successful individuals from the community to its classrooms. Students enrolled in the Humanities program can rely on a rigorous and enriching educational experience.

- Integration of the Liberal Arts+-
一道本不卡免费高清The Master of Arts in Humanities has at its core a commitment to the Liberal Arts. Our interdisciplinary courses explore the human experience as recorded in the literature, history, art, music, and other liberal studies from many cultures. The goal of the program is to cultivate our humanity by improving our capacity to question and challenge long-held values and beliefs, to think critically and analytically, and to become more global and spiritual in our outlook, to envision ourselves as human beings bound to other human beings. When we begin to see ourselves as citizens of the world, we become more tolerant.
To paraphrase John Henry Cardinal Newman, the person who undertakes to study the liberal art/humanities, who learns to reason, compare, discriminate, and analyze will not at once become a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, “but he will be placed in the state of intellect” in which he will be able to “take up any calling... with an ease, grace, and versatility” that are lacking in those without the liberal arts experience.
